always use public transportation in Portland! The downtown core area is "free" and the Max trains and streetcars are great ways to get around.

When the I-5 North is backed up and you need to get over to Washington, instead take Killingsworth East or Columbia Blvd East to the I-205 and over the Glen Jackson Bridge. It's much quicker and if you need to get back over to the west end take SR-14 West. There is not much traffic in the afternoons or evenings and it's a much prettier drive than I-84.

When using the Max Light Rail and the Streetcar notice that there is an area in downtown that is called the farless square. It is just that. You do not need to pay to use them if you are within the bounds. If you plan on going outside of it, i would suggest to purchase your ticket before you step aboard.
