The McMenamins brothers were among those fearless entrepreneurs who, in 1985, led the movement in Oregon to allow brewers the right to brew and consume in the same location. After a victorious fight at the state capitol, McMenamins opened the Hillsdale Brewery & Public House, Oregons first legal brewpub since Prohibition. Since then, Portland has become one of the nations premier destinations in the U.S. to enjoy handcrafted microbrews, including those of McMenamins Pubs & Breweries.
This is a cozy neighborhood pub with the usual McMenamins menu and happy hour specials. They bring in live music Thurs-Sat nights that tends toward low-key blues, folk rock, etc. Love the outdoor beer garden Spring thru Fall: picnic tables around a fire pit with trees and shrubs to shelter you from the street. Where the locals hang out. Affordable, friendly.
