Founded in 1935, the Tony Award-winning Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is among the oldest and largest professional non-profit theatres in the nation. Each year OSF presents an eight-and-a-half-month season of eleven plays in three theatres plus numerous ancillary activities, and undertakes an extensive theatre education program. Operating on a budget exceeding $22,000,000, OSF presents more than 780 performances annually with attendance of approximately 360,000.
I have no idea why I did not go earlier to Ashland to see a play at the Shakespeare Festival. But at least I went now and this was not the last time. What makes this Festival such a neat experience is that the whole city of Ashland is in theatre mode. You go to restaurant for dinner and they now you have to be done before the play starts. You do not even have to explain when it starts, everybody knows playtimes, how long it will take you to get there and how early you have to be there. And the whole city is full of people who like performing arts, it is a very relaxing atmosphere. Even if you are not a big theatre fan, there is no better place to go and enjoy a little bit of Shakespeare (in a beautiful open air theater) or - if that is more your style - a contemporary play in one of the other theatres. Make sure to buy your tickets in advance.
