Crater Lake National Park

Wizard-island-in-crater-lak_small

At a depth of 1,932 feet, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country, seventh deepest in the entire world, and uniquely situated in the caldera of a dormant volcano. But its indescribable blue hue (some call it azure, others say cobalt, indigo, sapphire, and navy) is what visitors really remember.

Crater Lake National Park is the nation’s sixth oldest national park, and has much more to offer than an incredible color. Its rich diversity makes it an unbeatable Oregon destination. Camping, hiking, and narrated boat tours please outdoor enthusiasts; 750,000 years of volcanic history and island formations in the lake amaze geology buffs; a wilderness filled with animals and birds please nature-lovers and photographers; and a comfortable historic lodge, fine dining restaurant, snack bars, and gift shop delight those who prefer to enjoy their wilderness through a window.

Rim Drive encircles Crater Lake and is 33 miles of pure scenery. Take advantage of the pull-offs and picnic areas found along the paved route. Each presents a new vantage point from which to look down into the spectacular blue water and observe geologic formations—Wizard Island and Phantom Ship—protruding from the lake’s surface. Although many of these views are technically “obstructed” by Subalpine conifers (evergreens that bear cones)—mostly Mountain hemlock, Noble fir, and varieties of pine and spruce—the ancient wilderness itself is worth appreciating.
