Take a train ride through some of Oregons most dramatic and beautiful landscapes. Wind through deep canyons beside tumbling rivers (and favorite fishing holes!). Watch for wildlife and friendly bovine as you pass meadows and barns. The snow-tipped peaks of the Wallowa Mountains tower in the distance. Car hosts will point out features along the way and discuss the history of the area. The train operates on the Wallowa Union Railroad, a once abandoned track that was purchased by the two counties in order to save a vital piece of northeast Oregon infrastructure and history. The track goes from the town of Elgin in Union County to Joseph in Wallowa County. Train tours are available in 2006 with a variety of distances and durations.
Railroads obviously played a huge role in the exploration of the American West. A great way to experience railroad history is this excursion train. A lot of volunteer hours are put into operating this train. The train runs along a 63 mile long track through the spectacular wilderness of the Wallowa Mountains following the Grand Ronde and Wallowa rivers. This is a very relaxing way to explore Eastern Oregon, especially children will love it.
Check the website for schedule details and call to make reservations on the train and have a look at the video I found about the train.
