Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation

Now called Nicht-yow-way, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation are made up of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla Tribes. Members of these tribes grew up learning how to hunt, fish, build teepees, and dig roots. Such skills were very important to these tribes, and necessary for survival. For generations, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla told oral histories and legends. Often, the coyote appeared in such stories, and possessed magical powers. You too can witness the story of how these tribes came to be by traveling to the renowned Tamastslikt Cultural Institute. Interactive displays, galleries, and the Coyote Theatre will enrich your interpretations of Indian culture. For those who desire an authentic experience in the open air, go fishing or throw a picnic at the beautiful, serene Indian Lake.
