Take the beautiful drive to one of Oregon's most scenic fish hatcheries and tour the fascinating ODFW operation. Pack a lunch and picnic at the hatchery or at any number of scenic spots along the way. 20 miles north of Elgin at Palmer Junction.
Not only is the fish hatchery located in a beautiful area of Oregon, it also offers a fascinating lesson in what it takes to restore the native Spring Chinook to the rivers of the Blue and Wallowa Mountains in the northeast corner of the state. The hatchery personnel provide wonderful tours and are very knowledgible about the fish and the area around the hatchery. It is so fun to see (and feed) these huge fish. The drive to the hatchery is just beautiful. Pick up a lunch at the store or restaurant in nearby Elgin and make it a fun and educational day trip. I had the opportunity of touring the hatchery as part of a special train ride on the Eagle Cap Excursion Train.
