Founded in 1988, Portland Center Stage attracts more than 90,000 theatergoers annually. With five mainstage and two second-stage productions each season, PCS produces a blend of classical, contemporary and world premiere works, in addition to its annual summer playwrights' festival, Just Add Water/West. PCS is housed in the Gerding Theater, formerly Portland’s historic 1891 Armory Building. In 2006, following a $36.1 million renovation, the old armory was transformed into the Gerding Theater. The performance space includes a 599-seat main stage and a 200-seat black-box theater. In typical Portland fashion, the armory’s renovation was completed as a pioneering green project. The building is the first structure on the National Register of Historic Places to achieve a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum rating. Located in the Pearl District neighborhood, the Gerding Theater is easily accessible via the Portland Streetcar line; the facility can also be rented for presentations, performances, receptions and other special events.
