I love walking - I don't consider myself as a hiker. By living in Colorado, there are too many great hiking trails etc but what I am talking about is in cities. I feel like I can walk more in cities than in nature. No need to have a purpose but every time I visit Portland, I end up walking miles and miles in the city. It is one of the best walkable cities in the US, I must say. In morning, my favorite spot is along the river. Less crowded and being close to water in early morning energizes me. Then, if I have a few hours in afternoon, especially before dinner at one of the great restaurants Portland offers, I usually take a Max light rail from the downtown to Washington Park (it is outside of the fareless square so don't forget to pay!). Then walking down to the downtown. I don't know exacly how many miles it is. I don't even know the route either but just enjoy the smell of trees and the view of Portland at the same time... it is not a jungle (!) so as long as you are walking towards the downtown, you probably end up coming out to Burnside....always great exercise and I can enjoy dinner more!
