Oregon Historical Society

The Oregon Historical Society presents "Oregon my Oregon". This is a vivid exhibit conceived to present Oregon history to visitors of all ages. The artefacts, scenarios, soundtracks and films demonstrate how Oregon and the Northwest became what they are today. In six "areas" you can study the main steps of this evolution. Area 2 for example displays the history of Oregon's native peoples (a counterpart to Tamastliks Museum near Pendelton). The two "Lure of the West" sections show the exploration and trade between 1500 through 1840. Here you can look around the campsite of David Douglas, who catalogued plant seciments all over the Northwest; here you can also walk through the recreated Hudson's Bay Company trade ship. The second "Lure of the West" area focuses on the period from the 1840s through the 1870s. If you are interested in the history of the Oregon trail this section will be an asset to you. Here you can listen to excerpts from the diaries of Oregon Trail travelers, and the covered wagon and its contents provide a sense of every day life and the hardship these settlers faced. Unique amongst most museums is section 6 - "Oregon Culture" because here not only the positively settled issues of the state are presented but also the current political topics and controversies. Take at least 1,5 hours for this great museum.
