Nice zoo, but skip the train ride

Dscf6849_small

Overall, we enjoyed our zoo experience. The new Serengeti exhibit was neat, as were the underground observation areas that allowed you to observe the otters and other aquatic animals swimming in their tanks. We went in mid-March, and even though it was a nice day, many of the animals (including the zebras and giraffes) were indoors due to the cold, so I would not recommend going during the winter months or chilly early spring months. The petting zoo attraction was a big draw for the younger kids, and they had strategically placed hand washing stations nearby. The food was overpriced, and the train ride around the park was a big waste of time; just a slow loop around the park without any commentary or information, and often you just saw the back of the exhibits - and they charged an extra $5 per person for it!

Love the zoo

We live in Eugene and have two young daughters. The Portland Zoo is a great place to take the whole family. We pack a picnic lunch to make the trip a little less expensive and eat on a blanket by the outdoor ampitheater. I love how the zoo is set up and the animals have lots of room to move around. There is a new Africa exhibit that they have been working on for a year or more and is now open, so you can see more than you used to. They are also working on a new monkey exhibit too. It's really alot of fun for a day trip or an overnight trip.
