The McMenamins brothers were among those fearless entrepreneurs who, in 1985, led the movement in Oregon to allow brewers the right to brew and consume in the same location. After a victorious fight at the state capitol, McMenamins opened the Hillsdale Brewery & Public House, Oregons first legal brewpub since Prohibition. Since then, Portland has become one of the premier destinations in the U.S. to enjoy handcrafted microbrews, including those of McMenamins Pubs & Breweries.
Although a whole bunch of new bars have opened up across Burnside Street in the Pearl District this place still draws a crowd. Down to Earth and less pretentious than the new bars on the block Ringlers Pub is a good place to have a beer before heading upstairs for a concert at the Crystal ballroom. Or you can just come here and play some pool and watch Portland's tattooed youth shake it on the dance floor. Food is served but not a reason to come here.
