The Sea Lion Caves (the world's largest Sea Cave according to Guinness) are located appx. 11 miles north of Florence and offers an awe-inspiring, intimate view of Sea Lions in their natural habitat. Descend over 200-feet into the world's largest and most spectacular sea cave. The cave is the home of the wild steller sea lion, primarily during the fall and winter months and is called the hauling area. The rock ledge below the lookout located just outside the cave is the sea lions home during the spring and summer, and is where they breed and bear their young. Sea lions live at Sea Lion Caves year round.
We went there last monday and were disappointed that there wasn't a single sea lion in view. When we asked a staff,he nonchalantly said they are mostly upriver where the fish is more abundant. It was obviuos that this was a regular trhing and not an accidental occurence.
It was partly our mistake that we did not find out enoght about when the sea lions stay there. But it would have helped if someone had let us know BEFORE we bought the tickets that they were a no show.

This is not Sea World so don’t expect to find an abundance the sea lions in the cave. It is still worth the trip and admission price. The view is breathtaking-from the unique view of Heceta Head Lighthouse, to the rocky cliffs and pounding surf below. The souvenir shop is kitchy, but would you expect anything less?
Yes, it is very “touristy”, but it’s definitely one of the places everyone should visit once
