Accessible Odyssey

I go to the acquarium every couple of years, and have done since my young ones (now in college) were quite young. There are exhibits of interest for all ages, a great "hands on" area for the kinesthetic learners among us. If I lived closer, I would visit more often, but as it is, the acquarium is a sufficient draw in itself to bring me back periodically. It is, imho, just the right size; I've been to acquariums in Baltimore and Montery and while they are wonderful, I find them rather too large and somewhat exhausting.

Oregon Coast Aquarium

This aquarium is most famous for being (for a short time) the home of Keiko, the world's most famous whale that was the star in the "Free Willy" movies (talk about whales migrating a lot: Keiko was born somewhere near Iceland, captured, brought to Canada, sold to a marine park in Mexico, rescued from terrible living condistions, brought to Newport to recover and then flown to Iceland to be released into freedom again. Looks like Keiko spend more time on airplanes than in the ocean). As the whale has been release there is no more Keiko here but it is still worth a visit as this is a small but nicely done aquarium If you visit with children check out the webpage for behind the scene's tour and the "Sleep with the sharks" events where children can overnight in the aquarium.
