Astoria Column

The Astoria Column was erected in 1926 at an elevation of 600 feet atop Coxcomb Hill, the location of the first permanent American Settlement west of the Rockies. Editor’s Tip: Take the time to climb the 164-step spiral staircase to the viewing deck at the top. For indulging in the challenge, you will be greeted by an unforgetable view of the city and surrounding rivers, bay, forest, mountains and Pacific Ocean. And don’t forget to purchase a wooden glider at the visitor center (proceeds go to the Column) and watch it soar high above the city...it will rekindle the child in you!

Sunset at the Astoria Column

It was raining as we drove into town and after dinner it was beginning to clear so we drove up to the column. We have never seen such a spectaculr sunset...layers of color on top of colors. The sun was barely streaking through as it was descending. We decided to stay in Astoria and spent the next day around this charming town. It was not the day at the coast we set out to have when we left Portland...it was better. We really enjoyed the Maritime Museum and just taking the time to slow down. We went back to th column and the sun was out. It was our first time climbing to the top and we wondered why...we always just passed through on our way somewhere else. Take the time to stop. It was a great lazy day and we felt we stepped back in time to a simpler time.

164 steps and a view

For the best view of Astoria head to the Astoria column and climb 164 steps to the top. The view over the mighty Columbia River is magnificent; one can only imagine what Lewis and Clark must have thought and felt like when they were on the final stretch of crossing the American continent. A small kiosk at the parking lot sells little wooden airplanes that you can buy for less than $1 and launch them from the top of the column. With some luck and the right breeze it will glide for minutes (and yes, the plane are biodegradable - this is Oregon after all).
