Blue Moon Tavern

The McMenamins brothers were among those fearless entrepreneurs who, in 1985, led the movement in Oregon to allow brewers the right to brew and consume in the same location. After a victorious fight at the state capitol, McMenamins opened the Hillsdale Brewery & Public House, Oregons first legal brewpub since Prohibition. Since then, Portland has become one of the nations premier destinations in the U.S. to enjoy handcrafted microbrews, including those of McMenamins Pubs & Breweries.

Best place in town for a beer

McMenamins is known for their eclectic surroundings, and this place has a neighborhood pub feel to it. When the weather isn't too rainy and cold, the outdoor patio is just the spot to enjoy a brew and some food. While yes, the food is good, the best reason of all to enjoy this place is their handcrafted ales, porters and stouts. For around $6.50, you can sample 6 of their brews in 4oz glasses. My recommendation is the Ruby Ale, not too sharp and very refreshing. The Porter is also good, dark brew, yet very smooth.

Slow service, average food

This is a mcmennimans, so you know what you're getting food-wise. I love cajun tots, so this is a go to place for me. The salads are overpriced and not very good. Why don't they have pizza bread? I don't know but mcmennimans needs to bring that to more places!

The service here is pretty much terrible. I don't know if it's just perpetually understaffed or what, but it's slooooow most of the time, and don't expect anyone to come back if you need water or ketchup or anything. We had to find someone who wasn't using theirs last time we were there.

Blue Moon Tavern

Blue Moon is an excellent place to meet friends for a tasty McMenamin's beer (I recommend the Rubinator - mixture of their Terminator Stout and Ruby Ale). The atmosphere is great, and they do have pool tables, which always seem to be full.

My only gripe about this place is their service is fairly slow.
