Portland is one of the most walkable cities I have been to. The blocks are smaller than average city blocks, so when you are told to go 5 blocks, it is still a relative short distance, not a mile. Downtown waterfront has walking paths and a promenade on both the west and east side, with bridges to cross the river every 5-6 blocks. The public artwork on the street level and building architecture make a walk interesting and appealing. The city is also known for its parks, so there is always a green area to walk to and rest as needed. The stores are open late so there is always a bustle of people walking around town.
