I agree with Kelly O, the hike to Van Patten Lake is a wonderful short hike with a huge reward at the end. It is a bit of a heart-pounder if you start at the trail head just off the road to Anthony Lake. Take a lunch and sit back and relax when you get to the top. There are also trails from Anthony Lake itself that are equally nice and provide fantastic, high-mountain scenery. Many people know of the area because of its wonderful, powder snow skiing in the winter but don't realize how great the hiking is here in summer.
Drive Interstate 84 25 miles eastbound from La Grande and take exti 285 at North Powder, then follow the signs up the Elkhorn Ridge of the Blue Mountains to the Van Patten trail head and Anthony Lake.
