Syun Izakaya is a traditional Japanese restaurant that serves food in a "small plates" format. You order a la carte items and it is served family style to share with the table. Rice is not included with the meal (you have to order it a la carte, as well) but with most of the items being served tapas style, I have never missed it.
Syun is, hands down, my favorite Japanese place in Oregon. It is not cheap and it is not served in a dinner style (appetizer, entree and side dishes), but the food is outstanding and it is well worth the drive out to Hillsboro and the price.
I usually spend about $25 per person for sushi, multiple items off the menu and a small bottle of sake to share. At that price, no one leaves hungry and you've gotten to eat several different dishes - many of which you have a hrd time finding anywhere else in Portland.
The Okonomiyaki is fabulous and it is my favorite item on the menu. The sushi is always top quality and generous portions. The entree type offerings are always delicious and served as they are ready so they are always fresh from the kitchen.
The sake selection is large and the seasonal offerings are very special and should be sampled. I don't even like sake, but I have enjoyed the sake that I have gotten here.
It is very important that you make reservations because on any given night, this place is packed. They are used to people taking their time to eat and drink and socialize, so the service may be a little slow. Just drink some more tea or sake and take it easy. This is a meal to take slowly and savor.
If you want cheap and good Japanese food, go to Sambi. If you want a great dinner style Japanese meal, go to Banya. If you want the great Japanese food served in an authentic izakaya environment, go to Syun.
