Look, but don't climb

Uluru - or Ayers Rock - is probably the most famous Australian landmark (although it is slightly more difficult to get to than the Sydney Opera House). Fly either into Alice Spring and drive for 7 hours or fly into Ayers Rock Airport where a well-oiled resort-tourism machine will greet you and offer everything you expect (and fear). The rock itself is can be reached by car or tour bus. Sunset and sunrise are both spectacular here and renting a car will give you more flexibility to come at the right time and find the best place to shoot. During the day you can explore the region on foot which includes the option to climb Uluru. Local Aborigines ask you to not climb the rock as it is a sacred place for them. So be considerate and explore this magnificent place from the ground. Make sure to bring sturdy shoes and plenty of water.
