Fort Rock is an enormous near-circle of towering jagged rock walls that seem like a fort, hence the name. As you drive on Route 31, you can't miss it since the rock formations jut up from an otherwise flat landscape. Not much else around for miles. If you hike around, you'll see it's even bigger than it looks! Like so much of Oregon's high desert, it was formed from a volcanic eruption. Sandals made from sagebrush were found in a nearby cave and are the oldest ever discovered in Oregon, dating back about 10,000 years. Interpretive signs, restrooms, and picnic tables available.
