Paulina Peak in the Newberry Nat'l Volcanic Monument is 20 or so miles south of Bend. Go south on H 197 and follow signs to Pauline Lakes, it's another 13 miles from the Highway to get to the cut-off up to Pauline Peak. It's mostly a gravel road and some turns are tight, but the view on the top is fabulous. The parking lot on top is size-able, I was surprised, but it is very easy to get to, so it's pretty popular for all! You're at 7,600 feet 9or so) with no sweating at all! You can see as far as Mt. Adams in Washington State, and there is a nice map that tells you what you're looking at. All around below you are volcanic flows, and the two Pauline lakes. Pretty spectacular indeed! (you will need to purchase a $5 permit)
