Vineyards in Central Oregon?

I'm a wine junkie. So any chance I get to taste some of the good stuff I take, even if it means dragging my wife, 2 children, friend and sister along.

These guys don't own a vineyard, but use the crops from Roseburg and elsewhere in Southern Oregon that are becoming better and better and better at creating a counter-Pinot.

Whether it's a white with the Viognier-style or the red with a Syrah/Franc/Merlot edge, Oregon is maturing beyond its Pinot roots.

And Volcano Vineyards is doing it better than most. There 2005 Syrah is already sold out so I'm waiting patiently for their 2006 release (just a few more weeks!).

They have won medals for their Merlot and their Syrah and it seems like anything red is something you are going to want to buy 3 or 4 bottles (1 for the dinner table, the rest for the cellar).

Note, their Viognier was a bit sweet for my taste (and my wife's), but I've never been much of a "white" boy.

Anytime you are trekking through downtown Bend, take the time to drop in and taste a nice surprise in the high desert.
