Owner Dan has been around for a few years at this unassuming spot on Sandy just over the freeway from the Hollywood district, and he's stayed open because of exceptionally flavorful, healthy noodle soups and Vietnamese specialty dishes. His pho broth is heady and aromatic, with star anise blending beautifully with stock. Add to that everything from beef tendon to spicy meatballs and rice noodle, with a heaping of fresh bean sprouts, greens and jalapeno and you have a meal for two (nearly). But his rice and noodle specialties also hit the spot, with choices like lemongrass chicken, beef, grilled shrimp and possibly the best grilled pork in town - sliced thin, marinated in ginger and other Asian flavors, and grilled to tender perfection. Get the Com Dac Biet to taste a true Asian specialty dish, with that pork, shrimp and other goodies topped with a fried egg. Filling and delicious. Another great setting for the pork is in a banh mi, a Vietnamese sandwich served in a crunchy, chewy roll with fresh vegetables; a meal in itself or a bit starter for two.
Make sure to order a Thai iced tea, which is richer and has a nuttiness to it not found in most other Thai teas in town.
