The Victory had a bit of a slow start when it opened up last year, mostly due to its location on a quiet block on Division Street. But, as with what seems like every commercial street on the East Side, businesses keep popping up everywhere and people are flocking to these streets that are perfect for summer strolling. Luckily, folks from the neighborhood and beyond have begun to patronize this attractive space (molded aluminum ceiling details, handmade lamps, an antique bar, open kitchen), and catch on to the small but carefully crafted (and frequently changing) menu. The Victory is owned by a couple of artists--one visual (who designed and decorated the space), and one culinary. They have an excellent (and often esoteric) selection of local (tiny) microbrews and European Imports, specifically Belgian. Good wine. Steve's cheese. And the food: a couple of solid salads with seasonal local ingredients, handmade pate and charcuterie (impressive!) , two different types of hushpuppies (one vegetarian, and I believe the other with house smoked trout). Last (hot) night, when I stopped in, the chef served me my wine himself, and I wished that I hadn't already eaten dinner, otherwise I would've tried their chilled cucumber soup! In the winter they had these cockles with chorizo and broth which were close to the best clams I've ever had!! When you order food there, you feel special--there's one chef making one dish, especially for you.

When you look into the windows of the Victory, you see what looks like a haughty little wine bar. And it is. This description however, does not mention the wonderful beer selection, and creative cocktail menu.
It also neglects the wonderful people who work hard to create fabulous food and delicious drink. The spaetzle is the house favorite, but most of the rest of the menu is rotating seasonally (they even harvest some of the ingredients themselves!). Don't expect a huge plate of food, but do expect your palate to be satisfied.
