I've been going to Dots for... a decade now... and though it's not my favorite restaurant in Portland by any means it's one I find myself consistently coming back to for reliable comfort food. Great for burgers and fries... they offer an artery clogging plate of bacon cheddar fries that I can't help but indulge in every couple of years. They're pretty vegetarian/vegan friendly and are a great place to come to when you're hungry late -- open till 2 a.m. I think.

Dots is the sort of place that you can crawl into on a stormy winter afternoon and discuss Nietzsche with your friends. Or Macro-Economics. Or how good the Cheesy fries are. Which brings us to a valuable point. The Cheesy fries. Eat them! You have never had such a delectable pile of carbs and dairy in your life! In addition you can get bacon on them! Its magical...
Also the drinks are pretty good. Try the Ricky.

Long a staple of the SE Clinton / Division neighborhood, Dot's cafe is simply too cool. In a good way! Even having had to rebuild after a disastrous fire some years ago, the place retains its unique feel, with odd / kitschy posters, velvet paintings, odd toys / nicknacks everywhere... Dot's is split into two halves - one non-smoking restaurant half, and a bar / lounge half that has some smoking tables as well as pool and a short bar.
Food is GREAT, with big portions and lots of vegetarian (even vegan, I think) options. Not that they slack on the burgers, either - they're great. Old favorites include jalepeno & bacon fries and a good selection of pseudo-mexican dishes.
The only downside I can think of to Dot's is that it can be very, very dark inside. Like hard-to-read-the-menu dark. But even that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
