Founded in Seattle in 1972, Grand Central now boasts a total of eight locations -- six in Portland, and two in Seattle. In addition to loaves of artisan bread, the cafes offer savory sandwiches, freshly made salads and delicious soups. The pastry cases are filled with tarts and croissants, mouth-watering cookies and buttery pastries -- all from natural, high-quality ingredients and all from scratch.

Hi y'all -- I posted this review, but realize it's posted to the WRONG LOCATION of Grand Central. The location I was describing is further west on Fremont at the corner of N. Borthwick Ave (west of MLK, before you get to N. Mississippi).

This is my favorite location of Grand Central. You can get all the same good stuff here as at any of the other locations (great bread and sandwiches made on it, delectable treats like "jammers" and savory galettes), but the fun part about this one is the windows that look into the working bakery. This location supplies the others, and does the wholesale baking I believe, so there's always something being kneaded, formed, folded, filled or otherwise worked on those long baking tables. I like to take my toddlers for a snack and then lift them up to watch the snacks being made (there's also a playground across the street that's good for running off the sweet stuff). Convenient parking lot. NO wi-fi.
