Ming's noodles are fragrant, fresh, tasty, and subtle. You can't go wrong with the menu at all. My favorite are simple House Special Ho Fun noodles, which involve chicken, shrimp, pork, and flat rice noodles. I am obsessed with these noodles. They also have tasty daily specials.
The outside is plain and unattractive, with a neon light sign. Inside, the air is sticky with oil, and yes, it seems the counters and tables came from a diner that closed down in the 1950's.
You stand in front of the countertop which is about 4 feet from the chef. He ignores the customers and uses untensils to work with fire, water, and raw ingredients. The women who takes your order is probably the owner - she has a very nice wedding ring on. She's in a hurry, as there are people lining up behind you, but she will just check in with you when you are ready to order. It only takes 10 - 15 minutes for your food to be done.
Why, then, is this restaurant the top choice of the city (as proclaimed on the Reader's Choice certificates for a number of years)? The food is simply excellent. It's that secret neighborhood place that is walkable from the hip housing in Park Avenue or Highland Park.
