MUNCH

This is a great stop on the beautiful UO campus, just a block from Hayward Field. The entry fee is nominal, and the displays are great, focused on history, biology, geology, etc...natural and cultural history!! The MUNCH also has a fantastic gift shop.

See the world's oldest shoes!!

Did you know that the world's oldest shoes are on display at the UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History? Ironic that Eugene is also the home of Nike! Anyway, this pair of sagebrush bark sandals was unearthed in eastern Oregon in the 30's, and they have been carbon-dated at 10,000 years old. I learned that the next oldest shoes in the world are just (just!) 5,000 years old, and they were found with the famed Iceman in the Alps. This museum is really "under the radar" but well worth checking out. They are also extremely active in archaeological research. They also house Oregon's famed "Condon Collection" of more than 100,000 fossils, and have one of Oregon's most significant collections of Native American cultural and archaeological artifacts. Definitely a "must see" for visitors and locals alike!
