Great hiking in the city

On the west side of the city is the largest municipal park in the country, Forest Park. Pick up a hiking map at the REI in the Pearl and drive about two miles to the entrance either on Upshur or Burnside and enjoy a wonderful day hike, some with views of the city or simply enjoy the forest. You can hike up to Pittock Mansion and have 180 degree views of the city, on of the best vantage points. Or you can walk along a lovely stream, and almost never see another person, although you are still in the city. This is one of the best things about Portland and I highly recommend it, unless it's pouring out!

A little piece of heaven in the city

I am lucky to live on the edge of Forest Park, the largest municipal park in the USA. It is such a treat to have the forest back up and be your neighbor. We hike the miles of trails even in the winter and enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest. We enter via a small path near our house but there are many ways to access the park. I recommend picking up a hiking trail map at REI in the Pearl and access from either Burnside or Upshur. Entering via Upshur takes you along a lovely stream where you can meander for about a mile before having to climb hills. Definitely a must if you have time to spend in Portland!
