Haystack Rock Awareness Program

P8290090_small

Every morning at dawn the volunteers of the Haystack Rock Awareness Program start protecting and explaining the wonders of that huge monolith and the wildlife garden on and around it. On the sides of their van you can read and see how this outstanding landmark came into existence, what a cosmos full of wonders exists there - and how it is endangered by stupid people and their selfish interests. If you have any questions, ask the volunteers! They are real experts and happy to share their experience and knowledge with you.

Love the rock!

Haystack Rock rises 235-feet out of the sand and the sea at the low tide line and is a protected Marine Garden.

Haystack Rock is truly a majestic sight to behold. The photos on the web just don't do it justice. When I just walked onto the beach and saw it, my jaw dropped in awe.

The best time to take in Haystack is definitely during the early morning hours. Wake up at 6, put on your jogging shoes and take a nice run up the beach and end at the base of the rock. You will be mentally and emotionally invigorated by its splendor and definitely motivated to run another mile!

Beware...the rock is protected due to the fact that it's home to many birds, including tufted puffins, gulls, and of course barnacles!

The Rock

Haystack Rock - part of the Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site - is a over 235 feet high rock monolith, the third largest in the world. During low tide you can walk to the rock and explore the many tide pools the low tide creates. Look for starfish, crabs and more. But watch out: every year people get stuck on the rock when the tide comes back and have to be rescued! Sunsets are spectacular on this beach.
