Fishermen's Wharf63534 KingfisherCharleston, Oregon |
i love Fishermen's Wharf, they almost always have fresh crab, they cook it everyday or you can pick your own and they'll cook and clean it for you right there. They even have picnic benches in the back and they'll bring you butter and some crab crackers if you want to eat it there.
When you cross the bridge to Charleston, turn right at Chuck's seafood and follow the signs to the docks. Its on Boat Basin Drive, Dock D. |

Cape Arago LighthouseCape Arago HwyNorth Bend, Oregon |
This site has Cape Arago Lighthouse listed in a location it is not. It is actually in Charleston, on Cape Arago Highway. Because Charleston is unincorporated and in a rural area, addresses on Cape Arago Highway often come up wrong on google maps. Easiest way to get there is to head west on Newmark Ave (its in Coos BAy, off Highway 101 just south of the MIll Casino).
Follow this road, you'll cross the Charleston bridge, continue on the left side when the road forks at Chuck's Seafood, and then just follow this road. Its a loop, so you can't get lost. The best place to view the lighthouse is at a pull out a little bit past Lighthouse Road. You'll miss the signs on the way there, but on your way back from the loop, you'll see the signs pointing towards the viewpoint. |

North Bend AirportAirport WayNorth Bend, Oregon |
Just thought i'd add that Horizon no longer flies out of the North Bend Airport, its now serviced by United airlines. There are 2 flights a day to San Francisco, and 2 flights a day to North Bend. They also built a brand new airport which is beautiful and now sits directly on the bay with gorgeous views. Airport code (OTH) |

Shore Acres State ParkCape Arago Highway West of Coos BayCoos Bay, Oregon |
To see some California sea lions, Steller sea lions and northern elephant seals without paying a $9 entry fee to Sea Lions Caves, head for Cape Arago. Drive the Cape Arago Highway toward the ocean from Coos Bay and Charleston. Park at the state park overlook and gaze out onto the offshore rocks of Simpson Reef, the largest marine mammal haul out site on the Oregon coast. Also, hike down the North Cove Trail below Cape Arago. This is another good place to see seals and sea lions lounging on the rocks and swimming in the water, although this trail is closed seasonally during the spring to protect mother seals and their pups. By the way, I do like Sea Lion Caves. It's a spectacular place and think of how much they could sell that piece of coast, should they want to turn it into McMansions and put up fences everywhere. So give the long-time owners your support. |

Shoreacres State Park89814 Cape Arago HwyCharleston, Oregon |
If you're traveling to the Southern Oregon Coast, don't miss Shoreacres State Park. In fact the short drive to the ocean west of Charleston is one of my favorites. Camping is available at Sunset State Park, which is about half way between Charleston and Shoreacres.

Oyster Cove63346 Boat Basin RdCharleston, Oregon |
I've lived here in Coos Bay for 3 years now and not until last week did I truly appreciate how wonderful the food is at Oyster Cove. Its a very small restaurant, but the food is just amazing. I highly recommed the Oysters Charleston. They do something magical to them with what they call a spicy Bayou sauce. It was all my dinner companion and I could do not to lick the plate when no one was looking. I also had the Ling Cod that was covered with the same sauce. It's a charming husband and wife team that owns it and I cannot recommend it enough. Its a very comfortable atmosphere and like most of the restaurants in the area, you'd be fine dressed up or wearing jeans. |

Comfort Inn Coos Bay1503 Virginia AveCoos Bay, Oregon |
My family and I traveled to the Coos Bay are at least twice a month for 9 months last year. We found the Comfort Inn to be not only the most reasonable, but also a very convenient location to see the whole Bay Area. We received very good service and had all our questions answered. Their suggestions for meals and sites were also very good.

Hilltop House Restaurant93405 Willsey LnNorth Bend, Oregon |
I took a business partner from Portland to dinner here and he cannot stop talking about it every time he comes to visit now. He had the Filet Mignon which he swears is the best steak he's ever had in any restaurant. My first time there, i followed the waiter's recommendation and had the Crab Linguini with a light garlic olive oil sauce and it was absolutely amazing. Since then i've been back many times and discovered if you go in when its slow or call ahead, they will let you order crab cakes which are quite honestly the best crab cakes i've ever had anywhere (and not on the menu). They were pricey at $20 for an appetizer of the crab cakes, but they were so stuffed with crab that you felt like you got your money's worth. The ambiance is casual, but the menu is definitely upscale. Another local secret that not everyone knows, the bar has a separate menu from the restaurant and has the best shut-my-mouth burgers you will ever have. They are made with filet mignon & new York steak and just writing about their burgers makes me want to go there tomorrow. Its a dilemma whenever I go in whether to sit in the bar or the main restaurant. |

Coos Bay - North Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau50 Central AveCoos Bay, Oregon |
This is where I work; working and helping visitors gives you a whole new appreciation where you live. I think even when i retire, i'll be one of the people behind the counter helping people find fun things to do. I feel extremely lucky to live in such a beautiful place and even luckier to get to help people have a great time while visiting. This area is a place that the more you explore, the more you will fall in love with. Stop by and say hello if you're in the area! |

Outdoor - In Burgers & Pizza305 S 4th StCoos Bay, Oregon |
I've been to Outdoor-In before and absolutely love their Clam Chowder, it was voted #1 on the South coast in a poll the paper did, but that isn't even the best part of this place, i didn't truly understand the genius of this little burger and pizza restaurant until i had to watch my 3yr old niece and 5 yr old nephew. This place is HEAVEN for any tired parent who needs a break!!! They have a large indoor play area complete with a bounce house and all kinds of things for kids to play on. Its gated and you have to press a buzzer for kids to get out. I have no idea what it is like to be a parent, but just one day with my niece and nephew wore me out. When we got to Outdoor-In and they ran off to play and i didn't have to hear one more question and could just sit there...i don't know if i've ever felt such happiness as when i sipped my mocha and breathed for a minute. We ended up staying over 2 hours and only left because we had an appt somewhere else. They have a great kid friendly menu complete with fries shaped like smiley faces. They have an arcade area for the older kids and you can even have a beer! It might not be the usual place a visitor would stop by, but trust me, if you have kids, its well worth the stop and it may even be the best part of your vacation! |
